Wedding Dinner

I had an interesting experience recently

Went to a wedding dinner

with like a full 9 course meal

OK, so Chinese wedding dinner are usually

Pretty damn lavish

Most of the time, by the 5th course

The guests are pretty filled up and

Left overs are inevitable.

What some hosts do, is

Instruct the hotel / restaurant

To offer the guests if they want to pack doggy bags for the left overs.

This is one of the best ways to reduce wastage.

However, the arrangement is ALWAYS initiated by the hosts and

Never requested by the guests,

As it’s tacky and, well basically, rude.

So this begs a question – how to

Reduce wastage / “recycle”

& still keep to the etiquette expected in events like

Wedding Dinners…

Silence is not always golden
It was really strange this morning
On the one hand, I was glad
It was no longer necessary for me to
Plan my schedule around someone
Yet, it was uncomfortably empty.

I had dreaded my mother
Asking me about where I put my stuff
Or updating me how she'd tidied up the place
Yet I really would rather hear her droning
Than nothing at all....

She's only left for HK yesterday
But the silence is deafening...

Silence is really not always golden.

So although it's totally weird for
A grown woman to say this....

"I miss my marmie..."

Accident and Emergency

Why do hospital A & E have such long response time?
I mean, it's A & E for crying out loud.
That means if it's not medical situations caused by accidents
Or if it's not an emergency, like severe asthma attack
Or chest pain implying heart attack
and other emergencies...
There really shouldn't be that long a queue?!

From Triage to finally seeing the doctor
We waited 3 hrs.
3 long hours of 'massive, overwhelming' pain
that was not addressed as we waited for the doctor.

How my daughter managed to cope with the pain
all that time confounded me.
The extent of her pain was such that
A second jab to ease the pain was necessary
when the first one did not even touch her.

One night on, they could not find anything wrong with her, so
she was placed under observation and will only be
discharged tomorrow am,
Provided there is no more serious pain.

Why no comprehensive, pro-active investigations and tests?
Coudn't that shorten the waiting and the 'observation' time?
Which equates to less grumpy patients and their relatives?

She saw someone dripping with blood due to some RTA
Like her, they waited a long time.
Why such long wait?
Shortness of staff?
Lack of consultation room?

The staff were nice and all
But the experience really left me
Disappointed, if not alarmed...

How will this hospital cope with
Large scale emergencies??

Mommy Diaries

Channel surfing brought me to this programme called "Mommy Diaries". This episode was really poignant. 2 mothers were preparing themselves as well as their children for their demises.

One mother was busy building up her memory box for her 2 teenage girls, with a 'mother's manual'. In it, she wrote about her opinions on school, career, sex, dealing with misfortunes and other things that are normally 'caught' from mothers, rather than being 'taught'.

Another mother had sewed a patch work blanket for her older one, and now she felt the urgency to sew one for her younger one. She also decided to marry her long term partner, father of her girls, so there would be a great happy event for the children to remember.

Both mothers are dying of cancer, neither sure how much time they have, except that it is limited. Both trying to put on a brave face, for their children, for their partners; both breaking down, lamenting lost opportunities of seeing their children graduate, or going to their proms, or just seeing them getting off the school bus.

They also had little 'luggage tags' on which they wrote down each and every single thing they remember something about their children, like on one of the tags, the mother wrote " You got a great report card in your 6th grade, well done! Keep it up!" These sweet memories help the mother to tell the children she loves them, one more time, and they help the children to remember the happier things and happier times when the mother is no longer around.

I feel a tinge of sadness watching the programme, but it does spur me to remember to tell my children how much I love them one more time, and perhaps start my own memory box for them, for we don't know when we are due to meet our Creator.

Death really puts things into prospective doesn't it?

MRT Incidence No. 2

Late night
Packed carriages
A few of us got onto the train
Homeward bound

Tired from work
Tired from shopping
All seats were taken up

Then I saw this lady
Her clothings could not cover
her bulging tummy.

She stood in front of a sitting passenger
who was yakking with her friend
both looked at the pregnant woman
briefly
during the commas of their
Ddiahorrectic conversation

She was sitting on one of those
'for those needier passengers' seats
with a big sign above her
and opposite her

Reminding passengers to
give up these special seats
for pregnant, weak heavily laden
passengers.

She looked at the pregnant woman
again...
and continued to talk, without
taking her eyes off the pregnant woman.

I said out loud
to the standing passenger
"OH!! You are pregnant?"
like Hint HINT!!!!

She nodded.
The 2 gossipers
Kept talking to each other
A man grudgingly
Gave up his seat -
Must be my LOUD exclamation!

The pregnant woman's husband
Leaned over to speak with me
about courtesy in Singapore...

Like, hello, what courtesy?
Singapore really has a
long way to go.

We have cars jumping the lights
Jumping even the zebra crossing
So they move on first
even as you proceed to use the
zebra crossing..
Like people pushing past you
to get onto the bus.

Courtesy?
This country?
Blah!!

I've seen more
courtesy and graciousness
in a 5 yr old american girl
than in the whole neighbourhood.

I was writing down
25 'random' things on facebook
when I included some of the
things that irritate me.

Not all 25 items are
about irritations mind you
But I did include
Erratic children
Running around with
No regard to other people
Or safety

Case in point

MRT Incidence No. 1

Mother and son entered MRT
yesterday - Monday 2 Feb
Fairly empty train
Lots of seats

Did the son sit down
Next to the mother?
No

Did the son stand up
To play with the hanging handles?
No

The son, all of his 5? 6? 7 yrs old
Decided to be a cross-country
Choo choo train / BMX bicycle /
Free fall parachute.

He ran up and down the carriage
Jumped up to touch the hanging handles
Swung around the pole
Like a very bad pole dancer

Then flung himself at his mother
Spreading himself across 2 - 3 seats....

All this while, he had body-slammed
into passengers walking into the train,
Passengers trying to walk out of the train
even passengers staying still trying to not
Knock into him...

His mother - on the other hand -
Deserved a medal for her composure
Her oblivion to the world
Outside of her mobile phone
As she sms relentlessly
Begging to be taken away from reality
& Taken away she was

Far from the behaviour of her son
Far away from the dagger glares
She and her son received
in equal proportion
from fellow passengers.

Couple of stations down
One young sweet-looking girl
Entered the carriage..

She played dodge ball &
Obstacle course
in order to get to a seat
a slight distance away from
the hyper-active boy -
She sat opposite me.

From the way
she narrowed her eyes slightly
Throwing glances
at the duo's direction
We obviously shared similar
sentiments..

I looked down
trying not to encourage
her look of disdain

Suddenly a male voice
broke the monotony of
travelling -
"Excuse me boy"

We both looked up
The man who firmly
spoke to the boy
was none other than
one of the MRT staff / driver
He asked the boy to move

But it didn't end there!

He proceeded to lecture
the boy about running around
and swinging from poles
that he should sit with his mother
As his actions would cause
injury to himself
and other passengers

He spoke politely
softly but his eyes were firm...

I looked up and saw
the young girl looking at me
We were both smiling
I even uttered
"Serve him right!"

By now, a few more
passengers were smiling
We... were having
the biggest cheshire cat grin!

The mother briefly
tore her eyes away from the phone
to pull her son close.
who by then was sitting still
beside her... without a sound..

Thank God!
Intolerance of bad manners
& poor social behaviours
still exist in this society
I was about to give up hope.

Alas! my stop was due
I couldn't see if
the boy could behave
for more than 2 stops.

The young girl glanced me
a good bye smile

kindred spirit of sorts...

It was New Year's Eve
& Sis took me out
for a count down party

Never had one of these before...

...Man what a loser....

Anyway, met her dance teacher
Who,
Some years back,
Pushed past 1/2 a century
I'm sure with a panache
that shames many lesser beings.

& still has a figure to die for.

Anyway, enjoyed the food
but the company,
aside from our group of 6
was a little less.....
Enchanting.

Realised that unless
I know a min of 20% of
guests at any dinner
I become very much
an observer

Which in itself
may not be a bad thing
but the critic that I can be
Kicks in and...
well...
I don't necessarily like
what I am...

Case in point,
Coming back to my table
I sat myself next to
My sis and
this prat of a young boy
of age between 9 - 14

His manners were terrible
no... correction...
He had no manners

He leaned right up to my elbow
to slurp his soup
He took my chopsticks
& left his own untouched.
He pushed his various empty glasses
Over to my side so to
free up space at his side.

He bounced his helium balloon
Onto the other balloons that were
tied to the flowers on the table
dragging the strings along
Over food, drinks and
Everything he touched

He then thought static was fun
& started rubbing the balloon
on his hair
trying to make it 'stick' to his head

When that didn't work
he started bouncing the balloon
on things, on flowers
ON MY HEAD.....
on things, on other balloons
ON MY HEAD.....

All this time
His mother thought
he was real cute
& played with him,
or smiled at his antics

He walked over
to my part of the table
while I was on the
Dance floor
& removed a glow band
that I reserved for use later
so that HE could have
one on each wrist

I know coz I saw
him doing it.

& his mother ruffled his hair
As if he was 'so clever'....

Aaarrrrggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Are manners so hard
to come by now
that Moms cannot
Or do not know
How to teach them?

Yes a child is a child
but a child will grow up
and if manners are not instilled
Wrongs are not corrected...
Then what do we have left?

Knowledge is nothing
without application of that knowledge
The world will be a better place
If we exercise a little
Courtesy
Manners
Grace....

Am I not being gracious then?
On the contrary,
I am, for I left
the teaching to the mother
rather than
Humiliating her
In public.

Hope the boy learns
before he chooses
the wrong target
to display
His lack of manners
& pays
the price for it.

You know,
You can never trust a calm sunny day
Coz before you know it...
it was the prelude of a storm

Just when we thought
Life is looking up
(not even good, just looking up)
Wham Bam!
We have to find another place to move to

Sure! we were informed like
about May...
& I was hoping to broach the subject
and ask them to consider renting out for
one more year?

They are not selling now...
but are renting to a couple of friends instead
so yeah,
we still have to move out

Have a feeling
we somehow pissed them off?
But instead of being upfront about it
they decided to not rent to us instead...
well, it is their privilege..

I am like stuck
it's so darn expensive to rent now
a 3 room flat for $1,500?
& the fact that we are all saving up for the
air tickets to go US end of year
to celebrate dad's 80th....

We are caught out
once again...
gonna be high and dry....

Please God..
Work it out Your way,
coz I don't know how to
work through this one.

Really tired out. So many things are happening I don't even know where I am, so to speak.
Mother once said that we use our health to earn money, and in the end, we use money to buy back our health.

Ironic isn't it..... But if we have that extra ounce of strength, to go that extra little bit, so the rest of the family can have a little more, well why not?

Recently I felt that I am experiencing God's favour. Not that He did not love me or favour me before, but I felt very much like He was smoothening things out for me. Praise Him!!

One is working one's little pants off. Hardly at home, hardly have time to care about how the home is, let alone making sure we sup together as a family.

No. 1 is too busy with the various projects, No. 2 with studies, and facing the 4 walls as mama and jie are both out... poor bambino. We are all slowly treating the house like B&B, and mama is feeling a sense of helplessness on the home front.

Is this the price one pays, earning in expense of the family, now trying to use money to buy back some family time?

In Mary Poppins, the patriach was reminded that the children will grow up so fast, that the next minute, when one stops to catch a breath to catch up with the family, one realises it's too late.

I hope not, not for my family... but how does one strike a balance with the lack of any other practical assistance?

My heart yearns for my girls, but are they too busy and pushing me away, or are they busy pushing me away?

Am I still in touch with them or am I just kidding myself? Am I un-nerved purely because I am a control freak?

Am I?

Lord, watch over them please as I fail to be there.

Shoes! Glorious Shoes!

My daughter just bought herself
A pair of killer heels
At killer price

Despite "killer" discount

I don't think I'd ever
bought a pair of shoes
for anything close to $70
Even in UK

Even now.

My daughter has to beat that
$97 she forked out...
I'd probably pay that
For some facials
Or supposedly sure work
Slimming stuff...

Haha..

But shoes?
Nah! No way!

Well!
Ain't gonna compete with her
She has her way of spending money
& I have mine
So there!
Hahah

Manners!
Had a really unusual encounter
the other day.
Was on the MRT,
Minding my own business.

These not-really-that-young children
(secondary, or upper primary at least)
Were pushing, hitting each other
Shuffing, even slapping their mom
In a crowded train...
during the rush hour home.

So, yes, they finally pushed into me...
Didn't step on me, but verge of
I looked up and said
"This is not a playground"

Oops... did I know what was coming!
The children moved off
to the other side
The mother soon
asked after me, in Mandarin
Wondering if the child
had stepped on me
or kicked me...

I said no, but they did push into me...
Then...
She launched into an attack

She shouted at me...
saying that I
'bullied' her children
Asked if her children were allowed
to move, and that,
If they did not hurt me
Why did I scold them
that I was "qi guai" -
Strange in mandarin

That if I could not cope with
being in the same compartment
with other people
I should take a cab.

The hurricane of accusations
and shouting
totally took me by surprise
I looked at her
Looked at the crowded train
where other passengers were avoiding
Getting pushed and shuffed by
their inconsiderate playfulness...
well...
what can i say?
I couldn't get a word edgeways?!

So I smiled and shook my head
That ticked her off even more
and her verbal abuse continued,
Accusing me of 'picking on her children'...

So I looked up to her...
and said to her, in Mandarin,
"With you kind of mother
you deserve to have
that kind of children."

With that, I returned to my book
and continued reading...
She carried on grumbling
for all to hear
but no on to listen....

I am stunned and shocked
By the total lack of
Social graces....
No, not even that
Social etiquette
some people can exhibit

Am I asking too much?
It was a crowded train
during rush hour
There was scarcely
Space to stand,
Let alone space
to exhibit
martial art skills!

Please people! Wake up!
Please parents!
Teach your children
Socially acceptable behaviour
In public places
Before they ended up
Pushing into
some Ruffians
and ended up
in a real fight!

I'll be Here before your Next Teardrop Falls
I saw her teared again today....
Not the first time either
In as many days.....

All I can say is
Guys are, by and large...
selfish baskets
With some exceptions.

You wouldn't and couldn't let her go
When you guys broke up
Amicably
Emotionally you still needed her

One moment you said
I can't love her anymore
One moment you blogged
"I can't stop loving her"

So she allowed you
to continue to lean on her
calling her every night
texting her randomly
at regular intervals

Then... instead of slowly
Weaning yourself
off the relationship
And learn to stand
on your own for a while,
What you did was classic...
You moved from one relationship
straight to another.

Yes.... I can hear you complain
It's not a relationship
I just told her I liked her....
FINE.... why tell her then?

Are you telling her
you've all grown up
and grown out of her?
Have you considered the
Other party's feelings?

Where does that leave her?
She allows herself to be
Your emotional crutch
Not even daring to 'move on'
"Coz i know it's easier for me...
(to stand on my own)"

Yet you had to tell her
the details
of your conversations
with one another
After denying
You had started to have
Some feelings....

AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH

She was starting her "O" Levels
YOU MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She does not NEED this kind
of emotional
Roller coaster
Oh!
But did you think of that?
Noooooooooooo

How do you think
She would feel?
Hearing that
After allowing the
Emotional attachment
You still have of her...

The crutch is thrown away
useless
discarded
For you can walk again....
Leaning on another person's arm

Great
& to think you used to call me FuMIL
Thanks
But no thanks.

I have to catch the next tear drop
